Atlas is developing a network of qualified and skilled  Atlas Certified Trainers to make it easier for people with disabilities to locate a qualified trainer. We hope you will want to be part of that network and help us expand the availability of qualified service dog trainers in your area.

Atlas certifies qualified individuals as Atlas Certified Trainers. Before they can apply, trainers must have at least two years' professional dog training experience, working hands on with people and their dogs. To successfully complete our program, they must demonstrate proficiency in training, ability to work effectively with people with disabilities, and commitment to Atlas’ values of openness and inclusion as well as ethical and humane treatment for people and dogs. They must demonstrate a commitment to continuing their education and advancing the standards of service dog training.

Certification as an Atlas Certified Trainer means that you have demonstrated the knowledge and skills to take a dog beyond the tasks associated with obedience training to train a client/dog team to work together. Beyond training the dog and training the handler to work with the dog, the Atlas Certified Trainer assists people with disabilities to use their dog to help overcome their particular challenges. This requires that the trainer understands how to address challenges due to specific physical, psychological, and neurological conditions. In working with their clients, the trainer gains a full understanding of the client, how their disability affects them, and the things that are keeping them from performing normal daily activities. The trainer then designs a customized and focused training program for the dog/handler team. They refine and expand the dog’s skills to find the best way to overcome the client’s limitations and work with the handlers on the most effective ways to use their dogs.

Atlas Certified Trainers also receive benefits from certification, including:

  •  Becoming part of an effort and community to assist people with disabilities acquire and train qualified service dogs to help them lead active lives.

  • Your certification attests to a high level of skill and quality as service dog trainer
